The City of Jacksonville encourages their residents to register their pets and keep all of their shots up to date. They point out several benefits for keeping your pet’s licenses in order.
- One in three pets will get lost at some point in its life.
- Lost pets with tags most often find their way home.
- Lost pets without tags almost never find their way home.
- Pets with tags and up-to-date rabies vaccinations are welcome at pet-friendly shelters during community emergencies, such as hurricanes.
A visible registration tag is a lost pet’s best chance of getting home safely.
The location of pet-friendly shelters will be identified by your local emergency management team when responding to the incident at hand. This information will be released through the usual emergency information channels, like TV, radio, social media, and JaxReady.com.
Species allowed in pet-friendly shelters will include:
- Rodents (mice, hamsters, gerbils, etc.)
No reptiles are allowed in these shelters, and pet owners need to have to have the pet’s vaccination and registration records with them. Owners will need to maintain their pets and keep them crated or caged, plus see to all of the pet’s other needs, like medications. Sheltered pets may be kept in a separate area from their owners. Also remember that service animals are the only pets allowed on public transportation, so plan accordingly.
The City of Jacksonville is also looking for volunteers to help in shelters during community emergencies, and if you would like more information about becoming a volunteer, you can find it on the city’s website, coj.net.
