Surcharges
The Texas State Driver Responsibility Program uses a system that enables the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to levy surcharges to an individual based on traffic offenses that occurred on or after September 1, 2003. Individuals are notified through the mail when a surcharge is added to their driver record.
Surcharges are evaluated in two ways:
- On a Point System
- Conviction Based
When a driver gets different types of surcharges, a different charge and letter will be issued for each (point system and conviction-based).
