When you travel, like most people, you want to get to your destination by the quickest route possible and you want to get there using as little fuel as necessary. Unless you are familiar with how to get to your destination you will not know which route is the shortest and therefore the cheapest. Fortunately there is a free online web mapping service called MapQuest. MapQuest was founded in 1967 as a part of Cartographic Services, but was acquired by AOL in 2000. Not only does MapQuest provide you with the shortest and fastest route, they can also calculate how much fuel it will approximately cost you to get there.
Planning Your Travel Route
Before you can calculate what your fuel costs will be, you will need to plan your route on MapQuest. By entering the place of origin and the final destination MapQuest will calculate the shortest and fastest route possible. MapQuest will even give you specific directions on how to quickly get to your destination. Take note on the total number of miles that you will travel on your journey.
Finding the Cheapest Gas or the Nearest Gas Station
Once you know the total number of miles you will be traveling you need to go to the gas prices page on the MapQuest website. It can be found at www.gasprices.mapquest.com. Once on the proper page you also have the option to choose whether or not you want to the find the cheapest gas prices or the nearest gas stations at your current location.
How to Calculate the Fuel Costs With MapQuest
In order to accurately calculate how much fuel it will cost you to travel you need to select the type of fuel your vehicle uses. Afterwards hit the calculator button located above fuel type and a pop up will appear.
- Knowing the total number of miles enter that into the trip distance box.
- Figure out the miles per gallon of your vehicle and enter that into the Miles per Gallon box.
- Calculate what the average price of fuel in your area is and enter that into the Cost per Gallon box.
After entering all of that information the estimated fuel cost will automatically appear at the bottom of the pop up box. Now you know approximately how much fuel it will cost you if you take the shortest route possible.
